My evolving series of Hand Paintings derive from the motif of the patchwork quilt which has inspired many of my paintings. The paintings are nine inches square, the size of the quilt blocks. In them I describe flowers or leaves of the season or images from the paintings around me contrasted with a larger scene. The hand offers a versatile image and is suggestive of the whole body. Likewise the artist’s hand gives concrete form to vision, providing a conduit between inner and outer. Our hands reach out, touch, question, bless, give and receive, hold and let go. Hands show connection and release, themes common to all my work.
